She & Him | Volume 3

Okay, we all know a certain person in this duo went through something difficult in their life, but those personal matters contributed a major part of this album. Lyrically, you feel as if someone you loved has left you with your heart in your hands. Not only do the lyrics inflict some sort of pain while you’re listening to the album, but it also shows how far Zooey’s come, regarding the songwriting process. However, the album is not a complete downer. Matt does a marvelous job balancing out the sadness, with that sunny, retro-pop that we’re all used to. Now, top it off with three covers (including Blondie’s “Sunday Girl” done partially in French) and you’ve got yourself another She & Him gem.

Youth Lagoon | Wondrous Bughouse

In 2011, Trevor Powers released the incredibly successful The Year of Hibernation, which was centered around the state of anxiety and mental distress. Wondrous Bughouse, however, is more of a spiritual ride through the physical world. It makes the listener feel more freely about life, and the wonders that it brings. Hence, the album name. To top it all off, Powers still keeps that Americana/experimental music charm. A great sophomore release from a really underrated artist.

Matt Costa | Matt Costa

Compared to the 60s/Zombies-inspired, Mobile Chateau, the Matt Costa album is more 70s-inspired (I mean, just take a look at the album cover). At one point, I was even reminded of the Beach Boys’ Sunflower album. You could tell that Matt is expanding his musical influences in every album, and experimenting with those different styles of music. He’s a very simple guy, just making music that he loves, and we’re just here to enjoy the ride.

Local Natives | Hummingbird

The band’s debut album, Gorilla Manor, was a feel good album about Los Angeles and all its beauty. That album was a solid starting point for the band, but of course, they had to continue their journey. Years later, they release this glorious album. The band’s at their “let’s experiment our musical boundaries” phase, and let me tell you, it’s working for them. They’ve grown and fully reached their potential.
